About Solution Focused Therapy:

The Solution Focused model draws its origins from the brilliant work of Milton Erickson, a

psychiatrist known for his innovative and unconventional approaches in working with clients and

was developed by Insoo Kim Berg, Steve deShazer and their colleagues at the Brief Family

Therapy Centre in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They were fascinated by what worked in the therapy

room that helped people to change.

The Solution Focused model is interested in looking for client’s strengths, resources and

capabilities toward managing their own problems and helping them find solutions in small, workable steps. Studies show that building on successes is easier than looking for deficits and that change is more likely when individuals experience themselves as being competent, capable and successful and having some agency over their lives. Clients report that they find this approach very helpful as it instills a sense of hope as they find workable steps towards a positive outcome.

Workshop Content:

Participants will learn:

- A brief overview and history of this model

- Basic assumptions that shape what we do

- How to expand and develop their use of the solution building skills

- Overview of how to conduct a second and subsequent solution building interview

Format:

This workshop is a skills-based program in which participants will view videotapes, conduct role

plays, watch live demonstrations and conduct practice sessions in class.
